On July 10, 2010, Don Edwards performed solo for a crowd of around 300 at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper outside Wichita, Kansas - just his voice, his guitar, and a room full of people listening. Jesse Friesen, still early in his career as an engineer, was running sound that night and recorded the show simply to sharpen his craft. Don was, by every account, at the peak of his powers - the pitch, the phrasing, the ease that made his singing so distinctive. The recordings were mixed, archived, and largely forgotten.

They sat quietly for over a decade.

After Don passed away in October 2022, Orin & Jesse Friesen rediscovered that performance - and what had once been a practice recording suddenly felt like something else entirely: a chance to let Don's voice lead one more album, surrounded by the friends, fellow artists, and musicians who loved him and his music.

That's what sets this album apart from a typical tribute. This isn't a collection of covers or songs written in Don's memory. Don's own original live vocal performances are the foundation of every track - his phrasing, his voice, his presence. The artists who joined this project didn't replace him. They gathered around him.

Michael Martin Murphey was the first to say yes, with one condition that would come to define the whole project: that it benefit Don's widow, Kathy Edwards. From there, the circle grew - Red Steagall, Vince Gill, Riders In the Sky, Barry Corbin, R.W. Hampton, Rex Allen Jr., and many more, each with their own story connecting them to Don. Kathy's blessing carried one request of her own: that Don's granddaughter, Lauren Padgett, sing alongside her grandfather. That duet, on "Coyotes," is one of the most personal moments on the record.

Every guest artist donated their time. So did the three people who have carried this project from a rediscovered recording to a finished album - Orin Friesen, Lisa Hampton, and Jesse Friesen - collectively giving hundreds of hours over three years, alongside the interviews, mixing, and video work that surround the music. No one involved is taking a share of the proceeds. Every dollar raised through the album is intended to support Kathy Edwards and Don's family - a practical way for the Western music community to give back to the family who gave their blessing for this record to exist.

 

Don Edwards spent a lifetime helping keep the traditions of the American West alive through song. This album isn't a farewell so much as an invitation - one last ride, with the people who loved him, for the community he helped build.
